Eight breakout sessions will be offered during two time slots
Session A 10:30 am-11:30 am
1. Students as Historians: Using Historical Records to Implement the Common Core
The purpose of this session is to introduce educators, librarians, and others to the use of primary sources in the classroom and provide them with information on how to find these resources in their own communities. Presenters will also illustrate how applying Common Core standards/skills to these resources helps students exercise and develop vital investigative and analytical skills that result in a deeper understanding of historical content. Primary sources related to the American Revolution, slavery, the Civil War, immigration and other topics will be utilized in the presentation.
Presenters: Julie Daniels, Coordinator of Educational Programs, New York State Archives
Jessica Maul, Education Consultant, New York State Archives Partnership Trust

3. Cultural Resources in Math
The introduction of cultural resources in formal learning provides a number of benefits – these resources appeal to students with different learning styles, they spark the imagination, and they give the students contact with authentic artifacts. Introducing these resources into the Common Core classroom, however, requires several changes in approach on the part of both cultural educator and classroom teacher. This workshop will cover the changes in approach as well as sample lessons. There will be an opportunity for hands-on work, questions and discussion.
Presenter: Dan Mattoon, National Board Certified Teacher, Mathematical Instructional Coach, Capital Region BOCES

4. Teaching the Hudson Valley
See how place-based learning can help you meet Common Core requirements. Historic sites, parks, museums, libraries, environmental centers, and other community resources can be gold mines if you know how and what to ask. For instance, do you know(1) ...what such places offer besides field trips? (2) ...how to go from a field “trip” to an “experience” while working with the Common Core? (3) ...ways to pay for buses and fees? (4) techniques for collaborating with site staff? Discuss these questions and more. Resources provided.
Presenters: Ashley Hopkins-Benton, Research & Collections Technician, New York State Museum
Susannah Renzi, Special Education Teacher, Dutchess BOCES Alternative High School
Steve Stanne, Estuary Education Coordinator Hudson River Estuary Program/NYS Water Resources Institute, Cornell University

Session B 1:30-2:30
5. Expanding the Definition of Text: Integrating Visual, Historical and Cultural Resources into a Common Core Lesson
This session will challenge participants to expand their definition of Common Core “texts.” Participants will be engaged in the process of reading closely for textual details, and will leave with an understanding of how to construct their own text sets using cultural, visual and historical resources. Take-aways will include resources to support implementation and ideas for next steps into the CCLS standards.
Presenters: Nicole Waskie-Laura, School Library System Director, Broome-Delaware-Tioga BOCES
Diane Aaronson, Arts in Education Coordinator, DCMO BOCES
Susan LeBlanc, School Library System Director, DCMO BOCES

7. Students as Scientists
Field-based learning experiences can be profoundly meaningful in furthering students' sense of scientific literacy and environmental stewardship. This workshop will focus on how to structure a teacher/field-scientist collaboration to develop learning experiences that give students the opportunity to participate in ecological research. Using current collaborations in terrestrial and aquatic ecology as examples, presenters will illustrate how to incorporate the study of biotic and abiotic factors within their natural context with opportunities to practice math, science, and ELA skills and meet the expectation of the Common Core Learning Standards.
Presenters: Agnes Zellin, 4th Grade Teacher, Berne-Knox Westerlo
Dr. Dawn O'Neal, Executive Director, Huyck Preserve

8. Measurement in our Daily Life: A Hands-On Approach to the Common Core
This session will explore how everyday life is highly impacted by some form of measurement. Participants will be engaged in hands-on learning with multiple activities using over 40 measuring devices, and the connection to the Common Core. We will discuss how students gain practical experience as they become familiar with measurement of length, mass/weight, volume/capacity, perimeter and area, temperature, time and money.
Presenter: Cindy Anderson, Education Director, Scotia-Glenville Children’s Museum
Kristen Schram, District Elementary Math Coach, Shenendehowa Central School District
